Standing Buddha

The side shrine walls are occupied by huge standing Buddhas - a significant iconographic development that had its origin in the Vakataka caves of the fifth century. As in a number of other caves at the site, at the front of each of the side walls there are four kneeling devotees, vertically disposed, with figures of seated yakshas at the very top.
