Avalokitesvara and Tara

A fine representation of Avalokitesvara, with his long-stemmed lotus and water-pot, Amitabha in his jata headdress and antelope skin appears at the rear of the left wall of the seated Buddha image in Cave 8A, while toward the front on the same wall a goddess with a large headdress - possibly Tara stands holding a bunch of flowers and leaves (possibly a bouquet of blue lotuses.

Standing female figure- main shrine

Inside the main shrine, the Buddha (with only one converging celestial) on each side overhead) is flanked by two standing bodhisattvas. However, the figure of Avalokitesvara (seen here) on the left is remarkable since it has four arms, perhaps the first attendant to be so shown in any Buddhist vihara. The hand with the rosary almost touches the hand of a large goddess farther forward on the crowded wall. Between them a male and a female figure kneel, offering flowers. The standing female figure's significance is suggested not only by the fact that two dwarfs converge above her but also by her beautiful headdress and the bunch of flowers that she holds.

Tara - main shrine

On the right of the seated image of Buddha is a standing figure of Tara with her lotus and rosary attended by converging dwarfs overhead with garlands.

Yaksha Jambhala and Hariti

Outside the cave, on the free wall to the left, the yaksha Jambhala sits with his wife, Hariti, who holds one of her five hundred children on her lap. As protective as well as wealth-bestowing figures, they often figure in Buddhist contexts.

Facade detail - cave 9

This facade detail sits right over Cave 8. Cave 9's elaborate upper facade levels contain a series of six seated Buddhas in ornate arches, in a sequence of three, two, and one, reading from bottom to top. Playful dwarfs and supporting yakshas appear between the arches, while bhadrasana Buddhas, probably the ""Seven Historical Buddhas", alternate with standing bodhisattvas, in the frieze below.
